Project Spark.
Dave MaCarthy from xBox talks about their new project, called Project Spark, a voice controlled games design interface, that also uses smart-glass. They start by designing a game world with water, mountains and a village. It takes designing and building a game to a whole new level. Instant game design and creation.

You really have to see this - I will try to find a video later, words just won't do this justice.



Revealing the world of games design to us all. Now, there might even be a chance for me to design a game of my own, without the help of another human? Well, retrospectively speaking, because everything had to be designed by humans in the first place. Even those fractal like landscapes we saw at the beginning had to be programmed by a human in respect of parameters of square area and height and depth.

Building from nothing, (which the Microsoft team initially thought would be the hardest thing to do, but turned out to be one of the easiest ways to start), shows how everyday people like you and I, could build whatever our imagination can dream-up! Wow!

What's amazing to me, is how (says Saxs Persson), everything can have 'a-brain'. I've always been in awe of games designers, (and I still am), not only for the way the environment behaves, like when cars crash in GTA4 and the bits and bodies go flying and taking on damage. Or the way reflections, sunlight and shadows appear, or how the scenery passes by through car windows. Or even how a characters clothes can change in cut scenes, to whatever you are wearing at the time. In my old programming days, a cut-scene was a set animation, a pre-made film that could not be altered.

Nowadays, we have things in the game world that can be taught or told to behave in a certain way, 'The Brain' of these items had to be 'programmed' by skilled game designers. Now, they have given us the ability to program these 'brains' into the characters or items ourselves.

I would have put the next video first, but I liked the other videos more. I should have probably told you more about what Project Spark actually is, because I know it is still news to a lot of people.

What is PROJECT SPARK?

Its called Project Spark because it is not a game, it is an ideas development tool! Project Spark is named appropriately, because it is about giving your imagination kick-start, a spark of imagination. 'Sparking-off the imagination to evolve your ideas into a game'. You can start right from a blank canvass and bring your ideas all the way through the game development stages yourself, as a one man team, into a finished game.

Obviously unlike in the usual games development process, where many minds get involved in the making of a single game and everything is done behind closed doors. Here, we still have a community; but a single games designer like you or I, can draw from a pool of shared resources of many, many other games designers to build our own games.

I wonder if game development houses like GTA5's RockStar, days are numbered, with tools like project spark on the horizon? There will be more tools like Project Spark no-doubt, and Project Spark will become more and more powerful in the future.

I'm sure we will still need all those highly skilled designers and technical experts for many years to come, but surely with tools like Project Spark, their duties may change somewhat.
