Gas-Stations-in-NewGTAgame.
The Brief.
The gas stations element, should be on a toggle on or off in the menu, because it could frustrate many of us. But it is a great idea to add realism, which is what we are talking about. If it is put on a toggle on / off, it would be great if you could only achieve 100% if the gas stations were on from the start and never turned off. re- difficulty level.
The gas station visit could work like this. You drive onto the fore-court of the gas station and beep your horn. Then a cut scene plays of you exiting the vehicle to fill it with gas or a fore-court attendant could come up and do it. I don't think there would be much point in having to do it yourself, it would be a pointless waste of program space on the CD, especially where a cut-scene will suffice.
Also, a HUD would need to display fuel level in the vehicle. This could possibly be integral to the speedometer idea, with a needle level for fuel and a temp gauge that actually represents damage level / over-heating of the vehicle.
The ability to use gas stations adds a touch of realism. Needing to re-fill gasoline tanks in vehicles, and fill Jerri-cans that are use in burning houses, businesses, bodies, filling Molotov-cocktails at home and at a warehouse. Jerry-Cans are mainly used for collecting vehicles from vehicle import storage, or your vehicles that have run out of fuel. If you have the Jerri-can in the boot, that gets filled when you fill the car.
End Of Brief.
Mission example: Imagine this.
A drug trafficking mule vehicle, which has had to be left by one of your gang members (or you), because it had been followed or chased all over town and ran out of gas. Or the vehicle could belong to a rival gang who have had the same thing happened to them. You could get the tip off of the drugs haul and follow the vehicle, if it is left 'run-dry' you have the chance to steal it.
Maybe the police have the vehicle under surveillance and are waiting for you to collect the vehicle and lead them back to your HQ, Then you'd need to send an attack force to keep the police busy whilst you fill and take the vehicle.
More ideas for gas stations.
Having gas stations opens up more scenarios for if a vehicle is to be stolen, you may need to call in at a gas station to get it to its destination. This could then bring a higher police visibility to the stolen car, since it is picked up, (seen), by the forecourt attendant. (Unless the forecourt attendant works for you). If you have a Jerri-can of fuel to avoid gas stations, or a flat-bed truck with the vehicle under a tarpaulin to transport the vehicle, but only later when you are richer.
You could even get the option to fill only a quarter, half, three quarts or full tank with prices and waiting (filling-time) to match, depending on the vehicle size. (An articulated truck could cost around $600 USD to fill. This is my best guess using info of 313 ltr (for artic tank), at 1.21 GBP per ltr at toady's prices 2010 for diesel 378.73 GBP the figure only needs to be near the true 'time-era' price, this is just an example).
Fuel Embargo.
Having gas stations also opens up ideas for missions for fuel smuggling during port strikes and closure, or other outside economic events that lead to fuel rationing. Hard times phase on the streets with only Emergency vehicles, public transport and some taxi companies being allowed to have fuel.
One tied type of mission could be, that you are warned of the possible future fuel embargo in news programs, the price of fuel costs rising and have a friend who additionally warns you of the possible coming event and what you should do. (Telling you), you could rent or buy fuel trailer tankers, (the type that are pulled as part of the trailer of an articulated fuel truck). Then you store them until needed.
A spin off is that it could be illegal to store more than one tanker and you have to hide them in one of your warehouses. This raises the police visibility of wherever the truck is kept. If a battle ensues in the warehouse and the tanker is hit, it will take out the whole warehouse and your stock. Plus you will be imprisoned for a week, whilst your legal people get you off the hook.
Rival Gangs Fuel Rage.
Opposing gangs will increase their attacks in order to obtain your fuel and you would have to put on extra security and even raid opposing gangs warehouses to put them out of business or to just steal their fuel. Once you had killed all their men at the location of the fuel, you would only have till day break (like in burglary missions of CJ in SA), to steal the tanker and any other stock with a fleet of your own vehicles.
Night Watch.
A night watch crew could be silently killed with silenced weapons and Melee attacks; and / or knocked out and hog-tied for less heat from the cops. All your men are masked in night raid gear. So long as you get out of the warehouse by the day-break or before the day crew arrives you succeed.
A script and story-board will be written for each of these missions at some future time.
More Mission Examples.
In another scenario, an opposing gang is trafficking drugs. You could have a two man team, one crosses in front stopping the vehicle, the other punctures the tank with a screw-driver laying down at the rear whilst the car is stopped. Follow it till it runs out of fuel. When the driver leaves to get a Jerri-can of fuel, you move in, put tape on the holed tank and re-fill from your Jerri-can. The other option being that if you openly try to steal the drugs vehicle, the driver may get a call out and you'd have a more powerful gang on your back and start a 'turf-war' before you are ready.
If this happens too early in the game, you get hammered by the rival controlling gang, loosing property and business in a turf-war close to the position of the heist to rival gang whilst you are in prison. You go down as one of the gang members during your fumbled heist and end up in prison, where, via cut-scenes, you are taught 'how to do it right' for when you next get out. This is by way of Criminal University.
Criminal University Cut Scene Example.
When asked; "What you in for?" They guy who asked you, tells you: "Hey, if you want to do a job like that, you should have attached a sticky bomb onto the support car following the mule vehicle". A voice-over (of the guy telling you this), could play over the movie-version of the crime in progress. Showing and telling you what to do. "Sniper the driver of the lead vehicle seconds after the support car goes up, but don't blow the support car too close to the mule vehicle, like at the traffic lights, because this will take out the mule vehicle too".
This stops the support team or the driver of the mule vehicle from getting a call out to (his bosses), the rival gang. You still need to be vigilant though, because the rival gang will be looking for other gangs to blame and may attack your warehouse randomly. Also the Fed's and the customs investigators will start to go round all the warehouses over the next few days, spiraling out from the crime location. You may have to keep moving the fuel truck each night, till you know one of your warehouses has been police raided, usually 3 to 5am after 5am, it is relatively safe to bring the truck back to a warehouse for hiding during day.
Also, this fuel truck takes up a bay of your warehouse, that cannot be used for goods storage or loading, but can be used to supply fuel to your vehicles if the drivers pull up in the loading area of the bay. Again another cut scene would show, one of your workers, usually the yard guy, filling your vehicles. If you set your workers the task of re-fueling vehicles the always just fill up, or you can set the yard guy to ration the fuel to a quarter, half, three quarts or full tank with a waiting (filling-time) to match, depending on the vehicle size.
I have lots more ideas, but that will get you started to see the potential for fun and strategy if gas stations were available.
